Dear WE LEARN friends,
We are excited to share with you the accomplishments of last year’s work and exciting news for our future. WE LEARN’s 8th [net]working and gathering conference in Providence, Rhode Island last month was a great success. More than 110 attendees -- 35% of whom were adult learners -- participated in over 20 workshops. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with many of you and make new connections. Also, we celebrated the 7th edition of Women’s Perspectives: Women & Communication. As usual, the celebration of student writing left us moved and appreciative of their talent, creativity, and insight. The event was made even more special by the inclusion of music from Voices of Hope. The next WE LEARN [net]working and gathering conference will take place in March 2014. Mark your calendar! We are also very proud of our new website, www.welearnwomen.org. It contains resources for practitioners and students. The website is live but continues to grow and develop. We hope it becomes a tool for all of us to stay connected, while continuing to interact and learn. More than a website that allow us to have “a presence,” we want this website to be a tool and a place were ideas, initiatives and resources can be shared with the community. If you haven’t yet explored our new website, we encourage you to do so. We also invite you to participate on the Connections website committee (no tech skills are required)!
One important change for WE LEARN is that Mev Miller, Founder and Executive Director of WE LEARN since our beginnings in 2003, is stepping down from her role as director. It was always Mev’s intention to have WE LEARN succeed as a participatory community-based organization. With this core principle in mind, the work of WE LEARN will now be moved forward by the Board of Directors with the help and support of our members and community volunteers. This more horizontal organization will provide new opportunities for action and interaction, but there are also many challenges to address. We are very excited about this new chapter and we are looking forward to working with all of you, a clearly amazing group of people who understand the critical importance of women’s empowerment through literacy.
Even though Mev will no longer be the Director, she won’t be far. She will continue to work with WE LEARN as an advisor for the board and will coordinate the development of the website. Her experience and commitment to our vision and mission will continue to be an inspiration for all of us at WE LEARN. Thank you Mev! We are honored to continue this work.
We Love, We Own, We Carry WE LEARN!
Sincerely, WE LEARN Board of Directors
Marie Doerner, Stacie Evans, Catalina Gonzalez, and Shellie Walters
